I (25f) have known my best friend (25f) ever since we were in elementary school, but recently we got into a huge argument over her obsession with a dating video game (the game in question is called Love and Deepspace), and I couldn’t take it anymore. A little bit of background info: when she first started playing it, it didn’t really bother me. But as time went on, she started getting more and more addicted to the game. And it started bothering me a bit because she could no longer have a conversation about anything without her finding a way to bring up her in game “boyfriend”, she started refusing to hang out with me on some days because she has designated days where she only plays the game and spending time with her in game “boyfriend”, couldn’t even go do things like shopping or going out to eat (something we liked to do when together) because she keeps spending all of her money making in-app purchases. (Which also caused a huge rift in her marriage because she also wasn’t paying her share of the bills), she changed up her dressing style to be more feminine and personality style to be more childlike like the self insert character she plays as in the game. I had tried talking to her myself and having her (now ex) husband talk to her about her obsession, but it seemed to only push her further into it, with this being the starting point of many, many arguments with her. So now the current situation I’m in: while hanging out with her a few days ago, she asked me to be her maid of honor in her new wedding. I got confused because I didn’t even know she got divorced, or that she was with someone else. But when I asked her who she was with, she just replied with her “boyfriend” from the game. I said no, and she got so pissed at me, calling me a bad friend for not supporting her on her big day. So I told her that if she thinks I’m a bad friend, then I won’t be her friend anymore. It sounded harsh, and I still feel guilty about it since we’ve known each other for almost our whole lives. I went to some of the online communities of the game to ask for advice on this from people who also play the game, but I got attacked for not supporting my friend’s interests, and acting as if me questioning her behavior was a personal attack on them, and told that this is how you play dating games. But I play video games, and they’re not supposed to be something you take so seriously like that, so I came to Reddit instead to get some more opinions. AITA?
