Earlier this year, my husband bought me a new camera as a gift, and I had planned to sell the old one. His sister asked him to buy her a camera now, and without asking me, he promised her my old one. When I told him I wanted to sell it, he said we have enough money and I don’t need the extra cash.
I was upset—first because he didn’t ask me before offering it, and second because it’s not like this is for a special occasion or that she desperately needs it. I could easily sell it for over €500.
He and I just see this totally differently. I see it as something that belongs to me and has value, and he sees it as something we no longer use and should give away. Now I feel like I have to give it to her since he already promised it, but I don’t think it was fair or right of him to do that. He didn’t consider or respect my opinion at all, and on top of that, he thinks I’m being selfish for not wanting to give it to her, which makes me feel even worse about the whole situation.
It’s also worth mentioning that he frequently helps his family financially, and while it doesn’t hurt us financially, she could also save up for the things she wants.
