So, I (22F) have a friend who I've known for years. We’ve been through a lot together, and I’ve always been there for her (24F) when she’s needed support. Recently, she found herself in a tight financial spot and asked if I could lend her some money to help her out. Normally, I’d be happy to help, but there’s more to the story.
A few weeks ago, we were talking about life in general, and she made a comment that really rubbed me the wrong way. She said something along the lines of, “Must be nice to have an easy life where you don’t have to worry about money or anything.” I was taken aback because, while my situation isn’t perfect, I do work hard for what I have, and I don’t think my life is “easy” by any means. She has known about the struggles I’ve faced, and it felt like she was belittling everything I’ve worked for.
So, when she asked for the money, I told her I couldn’t help her right now. She was upset and tried to convince me, but I stuck to my decision. Now, she’s been telling other friends that I’m “selfish” and “unsupportive,” and it’s causing some tension in our friend group.
I feel bad because I know she’s in a tough spot, but I also don’t think I should be expected to lend money to someone who has basically made me feel bad about my own financial situation. AITA for not helping her out?
