For context I 19F am currently a graphic design student (apologies for the clickbaity title) and I also work 25 hours a week in a cafe.

The whole point of this post is me asking if im saying something wrong that my mum finds disgusting. She recently asked me to design a logo and poster for a friend of hers I don’t know, I assumed I was going to be paid for this WORK and I asked my mum the rate of the job or if it was just one big payment, she then said “I find it disgusting you would even charge a friend of your own mum“ any my response was very taken aback and I responded “Im a university student and I have just finished a 12 hour shift and now you want me to work for free for someone Ive never heard of?”

My mum stormed out the room after she said “you are lucky to even be offered this you aren’t even qualified and all you do is sit on your ass all day” then a few swear words and insults to my work ethic. Mind you my 11 year old brother is watching…

She’s brought it back up today and I said “No im obviously not gonna do it im super busy” and her response was “I bet you would be right on it if she offered to pay, that’s appalling, I’ve done so much for you but you cant even do such a simple thing” I told her if its so simple she can do it herself and get exposure herself.

Ive explained many times to her its inappropriate to argue with me in-front of my little brother and the jobs are not jobs if they aren’t paid, she truly believes because shes my mum I owe her all this for free.

Im confused as to wether Ive said something wrong, I believe my tone was always calm, I try to not talk back and I choose to ignore her a lot of the time but my mum has always been aggressive anytime I say im busy with university.

I honestly don’t know what to do shes always been very confusing, one time she kicked me out for not doing the dishes, she came up and mocked me for crying and called me a pathetic human and 20 minutes later she came up with a takeaway. Idk if shes bipolar or something but I am not the asshole for wanting to be paid for work.
