I (25F) have been struggling with weight issues for years. Last month, I finally hit my goal weight after two years of consistent diet and exercise. It's been a huge deal for me because I used to be over 100 pounds heavier.
My cousin's wedding is next weekend, and she asked me to be a bridesmaid six months ago. When she picked out the dresses, I was still about 50 pounds heavier. The dress she chose is honestly hideous - this puffy taffeta monstrosity in a color that looks terrible on everyone.
Yesterday was our final fitting. When I tried on my dress, it was WAY too big (obviously). The seamstress said there wasn't enough time to properly alter it because it needed to be completely restructured. She suggested I just wear a different dress in the same color.
I texted my cousin with the issue, sending pics of the baggy dress and suggested a few alternatives in the same color that would actually fit me. She FLIPPED OUT. she called me crying saying I was trying to "show her up" at her wedding by "suddenly getting skinny" and that I should have "timed my weight loss better."
she demanded I either wear the original dress with safety pins or gain 50 pounds back before the wedding. When I refused, she called me selfish and said I was "making her wedding about my weight loss journey."
I told her I wouldn't intentionally look ridiculous in an ill-fitting dress just to make her feel better, but I'd happily step down as bridesmaid. She hung up on me and now her mom and sisters are blowing up my phone saying I'm ruining the wedding.
My mom thinks I should just wear the damn dress to keep the peace, but I've worked so hard to feel good about myself. AITA for refusing to wear an extremely ill-fitting dress in my cousin's wedding?
