Using a throwaway cuz she knows my main account.
So I (24F) share an apartment with my roommate "Jenny" (26F). We've lived together for about a year and generally get along fine. Jenny has this cat named Oscar that she adopted about 3 months ago. The cat is cute but pretty hyperactive and knocks stuff over all the time.
I work from home as a graphic designer, and I have a pretty expensive laptop ($2200) that I need for my job. I've told Jenny multiple times that her cat keeps jumping on my desk and knocking things over, and asked her to please keep him out of my room during the day when I'm working.
Yesterday I got up to use the bathroom and left my workspace for literally 5 minutes. I didn't close my door because I was coming right back. When I returned, Oscar had knocked over my full coffee mug DIRECTLY onto my laptop. The laptop is completely fried. I have some work backed up but lost a project that's due next week that I've been working on for DAYS.
I told Jenny that she needs to pay for a replacement laptop since her cat destroyed mine after I've repeatedly asked her to keep him out of my room. She FLIPPED OUT saying it was my fault for leaving my coffee next to my laptop and my door open. She said she's "not responsible for what her cat does" and that I should have been more careful with my expensive equipment.
I told her she's 100% responsible for what her pet does - that's what pet ownership is. If her cat destroys something, she's liable for it. She called me an asshole and said I'm trying to scam her out of money for a "laptop upgrade" (wtf? I just want the same model replaced).
My other friend thinks I'm being too harsh and that it was partially my fault for leaving my door open knowing the cat roams free. But I feel like she should be responsible for controlling her pet, especially after I've brought this up as an issue before.
