So, I (32M) have a 7-year-old son, Jonah. He’s always been into tech, especially keyboards and gadgets. One day, he found this YouTube channel run by a teenager who reviews keyboards, mostly gaming stuff. I thought it was harmless—just tech reviews. My kid loved it, and I didn’t see a problem with it.
The issue is that the guy on the channel used the R-word a few times as part of his jokes, throwing it out like it was nothing. I didn’t think much of it at the time. But one day, Jonah came home from school, told us about a kid who was "really slow" at building Legos, and then casually dropped the R-word.
I froze. My wife (33F) was immediately upset and asked him where he heard that. Jonah said it was from the YouTuber. My wife flipped out. She’d warned me about this before. She’d told me I needed to check what Jonah was watching. I brushed it off and told her to chill—it was just a silly YouTuber, right?
Well, that night, things got real. My wife didn’t scream, but she said she couldn’t trust me to make decisions about what Jonah consumed, and that this was just the latest example of me not listening to her or taking parenting seriously. Two months later, she moved out with Jonah. She said she couldn’t stay with someone who couldn’t even be bothered to care about the little things.
I’m now living at my old college roommate’s place, trying to make sense of everything. I didn’t think letting Jonah watch the videos was a big deal. It was just a teenager being a teenager, right? But I realize now I should have cared more. I should have paid attention. I should have been a better partner and parent.
So, AITA for letting this happen? I feel like I failed my family, and I don’t know if I’ll ever get them back.
