I regularly enjoy going out to dinner as I work in the industry, and I occasionally like to treat my friends along with me. Last night, I took my friend, Jake, out to my favorite Italian spot (which is relatively high end, definitely a more classy place). Jake had been feeling down about a lot of things, so I wanted to lift his spirits by treating him to some good food. Well when we ordered the first app, which was calamari in an aioli sauce, he started picking up the pieces with his fingers and eating them, then sucking the tips of his fingers loudly and noticeably. He kept doing that, without even using his napkin to wipe them (gross!). I gave him a look, like a "wtf are you doing" look, but he didn't even recognize it.
Then, we got our entrees, two different pastas. Mine had shrimp on top of it. As soon as the waiter set the bowls down, without even skipping a beat, he reached over to mine and grabbed a shrimp with his fingers and ate it, then sucked his fingers. I just stared at him, mortified by what I just saw. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Then with his Bolognese pasta, instead of using a spoon or knife, he would push bits of pasta with his fingers onto his fork. Then he kept licking and sucking his finger tips after that. He then took a huge bite off the plate and stuffed his mouth with his fork. The people next to us gave us weird looks the whole time. I made a few comments like, "you know, the spoon is pretty helpful with that," but he didn't get the hint. My last straw was when he picked up another shrimp, and tried to feed me in my mouth. I was like, "Ok, check please!" I am a pretty down-to-earth person and very chill in general, but I was genuinely so disgusted and mortified by the whole thing. Never felt so embarrassed by someone else in my entire life. I'm just glad we were at a corner table towards the back where most people couldn't see us.
