My boyfriend and i both still live at home for financial reasons. he has two cats. for context i have always been firm on the stance that when we adopt cats they will indoor cats only (with a closed catio). both of his cats are outdoor cats. he has a 1 year old cat that we will call theo. my boyfriends dad ran theo over approximately 24 hours ago at around noon. my boyfriend got home at around 11pm from work when he was told what happened and theo still had not been taken to the vet. he was told that theo got run over “around his hip area”. my boyfriend described him as lethargic with shallow breathing, would not eat or go to the bathroom when they just left him for the night??? this made me angry because my boyfriend and i are both over 18 and he could have easily taken him to the vet himself as we have several 24 hour emergency vets in our area. mind you there are five adults living in the house and not one person had the balls to take him to get help. i have worked in animal daycares as well as being a veterinary assistant so i have been thinking about every possible situation that could happen to theo. it angers me to my core when i see irresponsible pet owners because i have the biggest heart when it comes to animals. his parents also did not bother to get theo neutered until around his one year birthday (when typical neutering happens around 4 months) only because the neighbors began to complain that he was trying to fuck other cats and his temperament was awful. they also have a female cat that they only had spayed after she had a little of kittens. it has been 24 hours and he still has not gone to the vet. i have offered to take him as well as go over to drop off gabapentin or other related pain medications because they have not bothered to get theo anything. i am trying to navigate this lightly with my boyfriend because the situation is very sad and his cat will either die or be disabled if he does not receive proper care. but at the same time i am upset with him for not doing anything. am i the asshole?
