I have posted on this subreddit before, and it has been some time since I have first arrived at America.
It has been a nice experience overall. Though, the news confuses me sometimes. I have been accepted into an American university, which is why I have stayed. My host family is still very kind to me, and I get along with their youngest son, who is the same age as me. His friends are loud but kind people.
This is why, the situation that happened a few days ago confuses me.
I do not have many friends at school, as I am a quiet person. I talk to people mainly if they need help with homework or studying. Recently, there are a few girls who have been struggling with their math homework. So, I have been helping them out. They are nice and kind to me, saying that I am cute and that I am being funny.
After a few weeks of studying, my friends talk to me in a very angry way. They are usually nice and do not escalate things. They start to accuse me of trying to steal their crushes away from them. I tried to tell them that I do not know who their crushes even are. They ignore me and tell me that I am being a bad friend. I tried to ask what I did wrong, but I cannot understand what they told me.
They said the fact that I told the girls that their hair looks nice, or that their outfit looks cute; is way out of bounds. I thought that I was being personable and making small talk. They accused me of being the "friend guy". Which according to them, is when a guy pretends to be a girl’s friend so that he can steal his friend’s crush from them, or when a guy is girl’s friend so that she can cheat on her boyfriend with him.
I do not understand why they are so upset. Did I miss something?
