The other day I got into an argument with my mom about her comments regarding my medical condition. I have a degenerative connective tissue disorder and have to use walking aids to get around.

My mom came over and told me I was “doing better” and when I replied saying I actually am not doing good she kept insisting I was doing better. To the point I had to flat out tell her I am actually going to get worse with time and I find her insistence that I’m getting over it to be condescending. I understand she means well and is trying to make me feel better, but after the 10th time I’ve had this conversation I’ve made it clear I find it’s actually belittling and not helpful. So I asked her again to “please not double down on saying I’m actually recovering when I’ve repeatedly asked her to stop.” My mom isn’t the most mature individual so in response she said “fine I’ll never ask you a question about anything ever again, I’ll just sit silently when we hang out” and “that I have too many rules.” What am I supposed to say to that?

Later in the conversation I brought up how it bothers me when she makes remarks about her skin being “ugly and dark.” She is a WOC and I’m mixed race and have the same skin tone she does. She says this to me every summer practically, how she has to “cover up or her skin will get gross and dark.” My siblings are paler in complexion and when I asked they said my mom never says those things to them. When I asked her to please stop saying that she got defensive and said I take things too personally and the reason she says that “her skin is dark and gross is because she had skin cancer.” Which was news to me, so I asked why she didn’t tell anyone she had skin cancer. She responded by saying that her “medical information is none of her fucking business”

So AITAH for calling my mom a hypocrite when she told me I had too many rules when I asked her to stop commenting on my medical condition, while at the same time saying her medical info is “none of my fucking business”
