I (15) am on a competitive dance team for a company I've been dancing at for 10 years now. I only tried out for this team the past summer and have been competing with them this year. Last year I was on a high performance, no competition crew, and I danced multiple styles (including a lyrical duet). Part of this company's "tradition" was to share dances between older groups and younger groups. Last year, for my duet, there was a group of younger girls, all 5th grade or younger. They watched me dance this dance (often alone bc my duet partner would miss rehearsal and class a lot). The girls formed what they called "the [op] fan club" which I thought was adorable at the time. Being 11 and younger, they forgot to introduce themselves, so I asked their teacher what their names were. The only 2 you need to worry abt are called A and M. There were 2 girls with the same name (A) so we just called them nicknames. We became extremely close, and I started calling them my ducklings, and they called me Mama duck. Well, this year, 2 of them made it onto the same program as I did, but in a different group bc they're younger. One of them was M. Yesterday, during practice, we were watching each others routines and were picking "winners" (best performer, best technique, cleanest movements, etc.). My team wanted my 2 ducklings to win, and I told them that M's name was A. They loudly announced that "the winner is...A!" And she looked at them and me with shock. Everyone started freaking out "A??! Her name is M!" One of my teammates who announced it loudly proclaimed that "That's what [OP] said!" And I felt so bad. A and M do look very similar without my glasses (I do have contacts that I wear, but they're not quite right and things are still a little bit blurry at times), but I can identify them normally pretty well. I tried to say that I couldn't tell, and apologized, but she kept looking at me with disappointment and disbelief. I tried to explain to the people on my team what had happened. But thinking abt it, I'm not sure if it's truly my fault or not. I've been following exactly what their teacher told me last year, and have called her A before. She had never corrected me, so I continued doing it. So, AITAH for continuously calling my teammate and "child" the wrong name for over a year? And if so, how do I fix it and show I'm sorry?
