I’ll start with acknowledging how lucky we are. We have a small acreage and just finished building a house. My husband is self employed and I have a good job. All these things are coming together for us, and our hard work is paying off. Last August, we took in some family members. They had few options being on fixed income. We hadn’t completed our house, so we all lived in an arrangement of campers and a tiny house while we rushed to make the house livable. All we asked for was contributions to the property, clean up and help with the kids. The only stipulation we had was no drinking on property. See, we will call her Sally, Sally has a drinking problem. Even half a beer and her personality completely changes. The first time she was alone at our place, she was supposed to pick up the kids from the bus but instead was drinking. So we rushed home from work to make sure there was a sober adult around to get the kids. We asked Sally to go to rehab, but she refused. A few days later, she wrecked her car in a drinking and driving incident and lost her car and license. We agreed that she could stay through the winter, but she needed to contribute to the bills and stay sober. Well the other day, on my way home from work, my kids called and reported that she had cussed one of the kids out for busting her with beer cans. For us, it’s the third strike. She hasn’t been helping with the property or staying sober. We have given her til the end of the month to find someplace else. I’m conflicted though, she has no one else and nowhere else to go. Are we assholes for kicking her out? She very much has a problem, and literally can’t help herself. She is in counseling and has other court mandated stuff that I don’t know the full details of. But I also don’t want her to have any influence on my kids. After she was busted, she had her cousin come get her before my husband got home, so we have only had conversations about all this over the phone so far.
