My boyfriend (26 M) and I (24 F) recently moved in together. I moved half way across the country and quit my job in a hospital and started a less fulfilling job that I hate but pays better just to be with him. I have a toddler (2 M) My boyfriend got divorced in 2023 and his ex wife has main custody of both his kids (5 & 2 M). Their divorce was pretty nasty and she left him with all the credit card debt bills and car payments along with having to child support. I didn’t live with him or take a cent from him while we were dating in 2024 I lived with my dad but I payed for everything on my own down to pull ups and even paid rent to rent my old room. My boyfriend at the time when it came to file taxes tried to convince me to let him file with my child as his dependent since “he would get back more money than I would for filing him as a dependent” he didn’t he offer to split the money anyways I didn’t let him. In a way to alleviate how much money he has to spend so that he can help pay his bills and what not as soon as I moved in I paid for all the groceries at least $600-$1000 a month. And when I got a stable job I started sending him $200 so he would be less tight on money. I thought it was only fair since I borrow his car to go to work and what not. Here’s where I think I might be the asshole. Fast forward to a week ago I got my return back. My return totalled to around $1,300. My boyfriend insisted I give him the money so he could put it towards his credit card bill. I hated that he’s been so pushy about it. We got into an argument that ended with me saying I’d rather not cause I couldn’t use it for a car or in the case of an emergency since I don’t have health insurance right now. And he said something about being partners and we’re supposed to help eachother out. Honestly I feel some type of weird way about how he’s pushing me to pay for his bills but I feel guilty and I don’t know what to do. I haven’t even touched the money yet. AM I THE ASSHOLE?

Edit: he doesn’t pay rent it’s paid for by his job. And his car payment is caught up all the way till August of 2026.

Edit 2. I meant tax refund not return. My dad would be rolling his eyes at this considering he’s a CPA

Edit 3. A lot of people are asking where his money is going. He’s military so he gets basic housing allowance so he doesn’t pay utilities or rent out of pocket. His car is paid off till August 2026. He pays around $1700 in child support each month and hardly gets paid more than that. I’m not making excuses for him I’m just giving an explanation
