TLDR: I sent a dish back and the chef got mad at me. This was quite a few years ago, but has left an imprint on me when I order food at restaurants for the rest of my life. I (24f At the time) went out to eat at a restaurant with workmates to celebrate my birthday. I had gone to this place a bunch of times before, and knew they always cooked a certain chicken dish with just the chicken breast and it was always really clean white meat. I’m really easily put off by food textures and colors, and chicken is one thing that if I find one of those chewy cartilage bits in it I get nauseous and completely loose my appetite. I’ve gotten much better since this happened with textures and colors, but tbh it’s an ongoing struggle. Anyway… I ordered the dish I always got and was enjoying conversation with coworkers and the waiter was amazing. They were really attentive to our table and everyone was showing their appreciation. I cut into my chicken and felt the blood drain from my face when I saw pink meat and a huge bright red blood vessel running through next to a clump of cartilage. As I said before, I have gotten much better with these things since then, but at the time this set off my appetite and gave me a physical reaction of nausea and light headedness. A couple coworkers asked me about it and looked, and also said it looked like I was served a bad piece of meat. When the waiter came around again to see how the food was looking, eyeing me specifically because I know it showed on my face, I said it was fine. My coworkers spoke up and told me I needed to tell them what was on my plate, so I did. Showed the waiter the piece I cut into and he said he would take it back to the chef. He asked if I would like another dish and I said no, bc as I said before my appetite was gone. I am never one to ask for attention and felt so uncomfortable, especially since I suggested the place in the first place. The conversation picked back up, though it lost some of the vibe it had before since I was the reason we were out and I was no longer eating. At that point, the chef storms out of the back with my old dish in his hands. He brings it to me and drops it on the table in front of me, he gets close to my face, points at the vessels and explains that sometimes there are vessels, it’s still a good dish. He was aggressive and made me feel even worse about the whole situation. I told him quietly that I was really sorry, I just couldn’t eat it. He then swiped up the plate and stormed back to the kitchen. The waiter did come to me after and tell me they would take the dish off my bill and give me a free dessert, which I declined bc obviously, no appetite for anything, even a free chocolate cake. I paid for my drinks and left a tip, but never went back again bc of that chef. The waiter was amazing, and you could tell he also felt uncomfortable about it. After that, my workmates and I did go out a couple more times while I worked there, but it always felt like there was something a little off. Like they were waiting for me to react to my food or something, though I always ordered a simple pasta or something that wouldn’t be thrown off by textures that could get tossed in. I cut back on going to any restaurant since, and if I do and there is something off about the food, I will not say anything and just pay for a dish I didn’t eat. Was itah for saying something? Did I overreact sending it back? What do normal people even do when they get a dish with something wrong?
