so, i (23f) recently got engaged and was super excited to celebrate with family and friends. we had a big engagement party at my place, everything was set up, and i was feeling great. i’m not a huge fan of big attention, but it was still a really fun evening with all the people i care about.
during the party, my friend nina (24f), who’s a hair stylist, came up to me and said she had an idea for my hair. she wanted to dye my hair—right then and there—like, in the middle of the party. she said it would be a fun “impromptu makeover” and that the color would “symbolize new beginnings” as i was entering this next chapter of my life. i asked what color, and she said it would be a “mysterious shade” but wouldn’t tell me more.
i felt super uncomfortable with the idea. this was my engagement party, and i wanted to look and feel my best, not have someone messing with my hair when i was already dressed and ready to celebrate. i told nina that it wasn’t the right time and i wasn’t comfortable doing something so big and permanent during such an important event.
she was really upset and told me that it would’ve been a “bold expression” to show how much i was embracing change. she also said i was “stifling her artistic vision” and that i was too worried about appearances. now, some of my friends are texting me, saying that i was being “too uptight” and that it could’ve been fun to let nina do her thing.
AITAH for refusing to let my friend dye my hair in the middle of my engagement party?
