so, i (22f) have a ton of old clothes that i’ve been meaning to donate, but i haven’t gotten around to it yet. i’m in the process of cleaning out my closet, and while i was sorting through my things, my friend emma (23f) came over to help me with some organizing. she noticed a bunch of clothes that were “still in great condition” and asked if she could take a few to sell at a vintage pop-up she was helping with.
i told her i was thinking of donating them, but she insisted that she could make “more money” from them and that they’d go to a better cause with her. i said okay, sure, and that she could take some clothes but only with my permission and if she didn’t sell anything that had sentimental value. i even pointed out a few specific items i didn’t want to part with, including a jacket i got from my late grandmother and a pair of boots my mom gave me.
fast forward to a few days later, and i find out that emma sold the jacket and boots at the pop-up without telling me. i was pissed. when i confronted her, she said i was being “too attached to material things” and that she didn’t think i’d care. she also said that selling them was just a “natural part of her process,” and that the jacket and boots would “find new life” in the hands of someone else. she didn’t even apologize.
some of our mutual friends think i’m being dramatic about it and that i should’ve just let it go, but i feel like she completely overstepped. i specifically told her what i wanted to keep, and she ignored that.
AITAH for refusing to let my friend sell my old clothes at a vintage pop-up shop without telling me?
