Background first - I found a free metal patio set to replace our wicker patio set that is over 10 years old and falling apart. My husband asked me over a year ago to keep an eye out for something to replace the old one. And we live in a high wildfire risk area - so I wanted something that wouldn't catch fire. This patio set is wonderful! Needs to be repainted, but this is a piece to keep for decades!!
When I got the measurements - the table wouldn't fit in any of our vehicles. My husband tried to tell me to strap it to the top of the car (he was **not** going to help me pick it up and I'm only 5 ft tall). That's a hard no from me. I have seen things fly off the top of vehicles and I would have to be driving on an interstate for part of the way. I have ZERO desire to have a metal patio table fly off my car and into traffic possibly hurting/killing someone. No free table is worth that.
I rented a pickup truck that would hold the table and chairs just fine. Yes, it was almost 60 dollars - but this is a table that would be over 500 dollars, not to mention the 6 comfortable metal armchairs. I picked it up, I got it home -- and my husband was furious with me. Claiming that I was disrespecting him by going to pick it up without considering his suggestion of strapping a huge table to the top of my car all by myself and driving down the highway endangering myself and others.
I disagree. I took his suggestion into consideration and didn't want to endanger myself and others so I rented a pickup truck. If he had been there to help me with lifting the thing and strapping it down and driving the car and increasing the insurance in case it fell off the car - maybe I would be wrong for getting the pickup truck - but he wasn't willing to help me so I did it the best I could.
I don't think I am the AH for wanting to be safe - with removing flammable furniture from our deck and by not putting a table on top of a vehicle that is not built to carry things that way. He claims he can't 'trust' me because I decided to rent the pickup truck.
So, AITAH for renting a pickup truck? Or is he just taking out his stress on me?
