My wife's best friend has a 5 K that she started, and she had contacted me to have my company sponsor the event. I was excited to do it and didn't really pay attention to any details, especially because it was a friend. We agreed I would be one of the main sponsors, and the event is in memory of her late aunt, and the proceeds go to local families and communities. I committed the funds and did not think of the date of the 5 K until a few days later, and realized it fell on the same day as a golf tournament I've been a part of for 3 years. We don't always know the date, just that we are going to do it. My wife believes this is a very rude thing to do, to sponsor an event and not participate. My wife would also go to the 5k alone with our daughter, and she isn't thrilled about that because our daughter is neurodivergent and a little bit harder to handle in public. My wife told me she feels resentment towards me for sticking with the golf plan. I feel like I did a good thing by contributing to the event, and it's pretty normal for sponsors not to be at the event. I do understand this is a special circumstance, considering it's a friend's event but I also think it's just fine that my wife and daughter will be there without me.
