Hi, I am (28f) and not sure if I'm doing the correct thing. In September 2023, my late boyfriend passed. Everything afterwards was a whirlwind to say the least. I ended up giving my boyfriend's family most of his stuff back except for the stuff that I bought him.
In the process of all of this, I stopped talking to my late boyfriend's family for many reasons. I'm not going to go into detail but I will say that it was bad enough that someone spoke out against his father at his service that year and absolutely nobody disagreed that I had spoken to afterwards about the matter.
In December of 2024 I made it official with someone new. This person knew my late boyfriend and was very close to him. He wasn't his best friend but was definitely someone that he could talk to about anything.
Anyways, I just updated my profile picture on all my social media platforms to a photo of my new boyfriend and I. Almost immediately his family reached out to my sister and asked her if I could give them his Levi jacket ($85) and a purple hardback journal ($150) that has some indepth & intimate information about myself in it.
I feel awful for declining, but they knew I had bought it and I feel like they're upset with me for starting over with someone new.
AITAH for keeping these items for myself?
