First time poster, mid-time watcher on youtube (shout out to vincey reads). This happened last night (4/5/25) and I'm still urked about it because we have our next session in like 10 minutes. I'm a male (27) and a mutual of mine was talking about his sessions in a server we are both in. I asked if he was willing to invite me. I got invited to a 5E session and was told to prep my sheet and character for the weekend (this was like 3 weeks or so ago). I have played D&D 5E for 3-ish years (2017-2020) I dm'd for a solid year (if you take every day that i dm'd in those days i did, it will equate to a year.), and I played a lot (at one point, i had 4 days of D&D a week. I lost out of touch with it but I knew the rules very well and how to build characters and everything. I was also a rules lawyer for a lot of my campaigns i was in to say "this is the official ruling on it, DM how do you want to proceed" kind of lawyer.

This DM says I can do homebrew stuff as well as official if I' wanted. I decide to play a Necromancer [PHB'14 p118] Reborn [VRGR p20](Lich background). (the book and page will become relevant later). I don't like using dice cloud or D&D Beyond because I already have all the books in digital format and I have a PDF that has all the books imported in it so I just have to (auto)fill in the blanks. After negotiating with him how much my Hat of Polymorph restricts my lich powers, I start making my sheet. Upon the second week session, i come to realize i am the only one of two people who has an official race and class (with official MM'14 attributes) and everything about my character is official in the sense it uses everything from the books published by WoTC.
The second week we are sessioning, i come to find out the DM has not read most of the books or looked at all the classes. and mostly did melee classes and only the half-caster Paladin.

Last night, we were setting up for combat. and I will just paste the conversations.
index: Avrae: dice bot. Shane Cormac: my polymorphed lich. DM: DM. Glitchy: my mutual. Blaze: me (my irl name)

Avrae: Everyone roll for initiative! If you have a character set up with SheetManager: !init join If it's a 5e monster: !init madd <monster name> Otherwise: !init add <modifier> <name>AvraeAPP β€” Yesterday at 19:02. WO1 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (16) + 2 = 18.

Avrae: Shane makes an Initiative check!1d20 (13) + 3 = 16Added to combat! [i only have a stat sheet on the dice bot so i can join initiative]

Avrae: WO2 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (13) + 2 = 15.

19:03*]*WO3 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (5) + 2 = 7.

19:03*]*WO4 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (4) + 2 = 6.

19:03*]*WO5 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (4) + 2 = 6.

19:03*]*WO6 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (1) + 2 = 3

*[19:03]*WO7 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (6) + 2 = 8.

19:03*]*WO8 was added to combat with initiative 1d20 (8) + 2 = 10.

{others roll their initiative}
DM: I think Avrae messed up your HP again. [My hp is inaccurate because i only used the PDF sheet for my stats, inventory, spells, etc.]
Blaze β€” "no. i don't use it to calculate shit. only for initiative"

Dm - "Oh, ...For my next Campaign, you're using Beyond with Official stuff. <w<;;; (edited)"

Blaze- "no and i already am using official stuff."

DM- Ah huh. XD

Blaze- "i'm not making my sheets in dice bots where i have to pay for it*.* i already have my pirated copies of the books. and i have money in a sheet programed with the books"

DM - "You don't have to pay to use Beyond, you would just pay for extra stuff if you need it." (edited)

Blaze - "the extra stuff being all the books needed to put spells, races, and abailities"

Blaze- "so i'll bare bones your stuff. plus, i'm also 100% sure i'm the only one besides grog who is using the 5e offcial class and race for this game. the only thing that isn't official for char creation is my background/lore"

DM- "And Class"

Blaze- "my class is full 5e necromancer"

DM- "It's 5e, but not official."

Blaze - "Level 1: Arcane Recovery

PHB'14 p112

You have learned to regain some of your magical energy by studying your spellbook. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher.

For example, if you're a 4th-level wizard, you can recover up to two levels worth of spell slots. You can recover either a 2nd-level spell slot or two 1st-level spell slots.

Level 1: Spellcasting

PHB'14 p112

As a student of arcane magic, you have a spellbook containing spells that show the first glimmerings of your true power. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting and chapter 11 for the wizard spell list.

Cantrips

At 1st level, you know three cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list. You learn additional wizard cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Wizard table.

Spellbook

At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice. Your spellbook is the repository of the wizard spells you know, except your cantrips, which are fixed in your mind.

[Removed the rest of the information to make it shorter]

Level 2: Arcane Tradition

PHB'14 p112

When you reach 2nd level, you choose an arcane tradition from the list of available traditions, shaping your practice of magic. Your choice grants you features at 2nd level and again at 6th, 10th, and 14th level.

School of Necromancy

PHB'14 p118

The School of Necromancy explores the cosmic forces of life, death, and undeath. As you focus your studies in this tradition, you learn to manipulate the energy that animates all living things. As you progress, you learn to sap the life force from a creature as your magic destroys its body, transforming that vital energy into magical power you can manipulate.

Most people see necromancers as menacing, or even villainous, due to the close association with death. Not all necromancers are evil, but the forces they manipulate are considered taboo by many societies.

Level 2: Necromancy Savant

PHB'14 p118

Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the gold and time you must spend to copy a necromancy spell into your spellbook is halved.

Level 2: Grim Harvest

PHB'14 p118

At 2nd level, you gain the ability to reap life energy from creatures you kill with your spells. Once per turn when you kill one or more creatures with a spell of 1st level or higher, you regain hit points equal to twice the spell's level, or three times its level if the spell belongs to the School of Necromancy. You don't gain this benefit for killing constructs or undead.

what part of ANY OF THIS is not official 2014 5e? it's what i built my class around"

DM - "It's Homebrew. Anyone could make it up. "

Blaze - "what i told you, and what i sent is straight from the '14 book of phb! my background and extra stuff you agree'd to is character lore stuff"

DM- "I know, you based this Class on an Official Enemy Creature, but the Necromancer Class still a Homebrew."

Blaze β€” "School of Necromancy

PHB'14 p118

PAGE 118 OF THE PHB"

Glitchy β€” "I just opened my PHB and yep it’s there"

DM - "We told you about Caps."

Blaze β€” "it's a bloody official class from the original book posted. it had never been modifed until '24 with added features"

DM - "That would have been your Second Strike, had Glitch not backed you up on that. That's twice you owe them today. Also, thank you, Glitch, for fact-checking."

Glitchy β€” "Let’s just calm down"

Blaze: "what i based the monster manual around is my background of my character to give them the extra stuff. I have not made anything home brew. i just asked for approval of additional stuff to add to my character so i am not just a bare bones reborn necromancer with nothing flashy to my name."

DM- "We get it, now chill out and move on."

Blaze: *post the gif from Santa clause 3: the escape clause "I INVTENTED CHILL!"*

Afterwards the DM called off the rest of the session. I went for a Smoke and a Shag after to clear my head before bed. Nothing has been said since then and session is starting soon.

I know when I am the AH and I will cop to it and admit to it. I don't feel like I am, especially when I am sending the class and subclass information with the official book's name and page number and the guy won't open his eyes to the facts.

I really love the game, I know i should leave and I'm sounding like the girl in a toxic relationship of "maybe it will get better if I stay longer" ordeal.
I'd rather play pathfinder 2 but I'm, at the Point where I'll take anything I can get because I haven't played in so long and want to.

I am typing this at work and session is in a bit so i'll read everything when I have the time and reply to comments.

Thanks for your time.
