I am using a new account because I occasionally post on my city's reddit page and I don't want to draw attention to this any more than has already happened.
Tonight is my daughter's 15th birthday party. Her actual birthday was on Wednesday but she wanted to do an old fashioned 70s themed disco skate party at Skate Country and thought more of her friends would come if it were on Friday.
What I didn't know is that apparently every year for the last 40 years in our city the last Friday in April is a gang initiation night where gangs go around an flash their high beams at people and if the person flashes back it means they are marked to be either be@ten up or worse to initiate new members in the gang. Police are forecasting this to be the worst year yet in reaction to certain things going on with deportations and a lot of gangs are seeking revenge. Because I know it's going to get asked, I'm not some boomer who believes every internet rumor--I actually heard about this on multiple radio stations this morning.
I have just cancelled my daughter's party because even if this is just an internet rumor, why not be safe? I understand she is upset but we can have the party another day and why not just stay at home and avoid it? My daughter's father has to interject and says he'll take over the party even though its not his custody night which is just throwing oil on the fire because he's getting her excited for something I'm not going to allow. My daughter says all her friends will hate her but I say that's fine, at least they will be safe.
AITA?
