I’m 45f my partner is 53F. We have been together 6 years and purchased a home together 3 years ago.
We live in our state capital (A-city) which is where we were both born. I’ve lived here my whole life, all my family and friends are here and my job and home is here.
My partner has moved around a lot but has lived in this city most of their life. They spent 6 years living in “B-town”. My partner has 2 close friends in B-town. Has a sister and child (adult child) and job in A-town.
B-town is a regional holiday destination, most of the work the is service/tourism work. I have a middle management job in Tech and my industry does not exist in B-town. My partner seems to think I could get “some type of work” in B-town. My company has a small footprint in B-town but not for my job. The jobs they have in B-town are not in my industry more like jobs in shop front where you walk in.
My partner wants us to sell our home, everything we own, move away from our families and move 4000km to B-town and start over. I don’t want to go. I see no reason to do this. We have travelled to B-town for vacations and it is okay for a vacation, nice for a couple of days, but I prefer living in a city. Additionally, there is limited medical available in B-town and it is in an area of high natural disaster where severe storms, flooding and tornados occur regularly. When this weather occurs B-town often goes cut off to days-weeks and food etc is difficult to get.
My partners reason for wanting to go is that they feel attached to B-town. I feel that it is more that they have two close friends in B-town.
This is causing massive issues for us and we are on the verge of breaking up. For now she is staying, but I feel that it might be best to call things off as this conversation keeps coming up every few months and it causes us both a lot of distress when it dies. There is no compromise as one of us will be unhappy.
AITAH for not selling my home, quitting my job, moving away from everyone I love to live it a town I don’t really like.
