My neighbor is a nice person, but an irresponsible dog owner. We live in a duplex and have a shared backyard. Neighbor has the lower level, we have the upper. This dog has lunged at me and my child, so I try to avoid being around it. This dog is (I'm guessing) around 80 pounds, where as mine are small dogs, two around 20 pounds and two around 10 pounds.
In mid-December 2024, my husband took the dogs out to the backyard and noticed too late that our neighbor's back door was wide open and the neighbor's dog ran out the door, and started attacking one of the smaller dogs, shaking her pretty badly and my husband had to kick the neighbor dog to get it to stop. It was pretty traumatic, and we were all pretty shaken up. The neighbor was very apologetic and paid us back for the subsequent vet bill, so we decided not to report him (stupid, I know). And, our relationship continued to be friendly.
However, this morning when I was taking the dogs out at our normal time, the neighbor just opened up his back door and walked back into his house. There is a window in the back door where he should have seen us out there. I looked over and saw his dog barreling towards us and I screamed NO, over and over while trying to pull them towards me and away from him. This time I had to punch the neighbor dog in the head to get him off one of my larger dogs. Neighbor came back out saying, "Sorry, sorry", and in this deep guttural voice I didn't even recognize, I screamed "That dog needs to be on a fucking leash!, That dog should have a muzzle on at all times!" I have now filed a report with Animal Control who says they'll go "talk" to him. Whatever that will accomplish.
Like, WTF, dude?! Did we learn NOTHING from last time?? He works from home, so I'm guessing him opening his back door and just letting his dog roam free around the yard is a habit of his. Which is dangerous, because the yard only has fencing on 2 sides.
My question is, WIBTA if I made a post on our neighborhood Facebook page warning other dog owners not to walk their dogs past our duplex and showing them the damage he has caused 2 of my dogs? The reason I think I should is because he obviously isn't being responsible with his dog and letting him out without supervision into an unfenced yard. He's very apologetic and says he'll send money to cover today's vet bill on Thursday. I don't wanna be an AH neighbor by calling him out publicly. But, I also know I'm livid right now and may not be thinking right. Thoughts, advice?
