It’s Easter, so I (18F) went to my boyfriend’s (18M) house for lunch. When I had gotten there, his mom said that they had forgotten pumpkin pie/bars. I work in a retail store so I offered to go with my boyfriend to go get them from the store I work at so I could use my discount. Once getting in the car, as a joke he says “What did you get me for Easter?” “I haven’t decided, I didn’t know we were doing gifts I’ll have to find something. Did you get me something?” “Yeah the Xbox gift card I called you about earlier.” I was confused because he called me prior to ask what kind of gift card I wanted because his mom sent him to the store to get me a gift card…that’s what he told me over the phone so I responded “Wasn’t that from your mom?” “No I paid for it” Then we went back and forth about how it wasn’t the same thing because it didn’t come from his heart. Then he started saying that he will always ask someone else’s opinion on what to get me for things. I told him that his mom shouldn’t be telling him what to get me because he knows me better than she does and that it hurts my feelings that he expects me to get something for him when from the sound of it he wasn’t even planning on getting me anything until his mom brought up the idea.

Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t mad about him not wanting to get me a gift, I wasn’t even mad. I was frustrated about the fact that he got one because his mom told him to, and then expected me to get him something too.

Then he started yelling at me about how I was just getting upset to ruin his day and how I always get upset over stupid things. I explained to him that it wasn’t stupid to me and that it actually mattered… I didn’t hear much of what was said afterwards since I was covering my ears. I don’t like when he yells at me so I tried to ignore it.

I then told him that I wanted to go home and that was the end of it.

Who’s in the wrong? Am I in the wrong for getting upset about my gift not being from his heart?
