I have a team member in a group project right now that keeps on saying he is 'confused' on what the project is about and that 'we need to meet', but every time we meet he cancels or is only available for a short period of time. I feel like he is using me and the others to finish his tasks for him, but feel badly about assuming this.
He keeps on asking me what to do, and I'm getting very frustrated because this is a group project where we all pitch in, not where I tell him what he should do. In my mind, collaborative effort is when everyone looks at the task at hand and brings ideas and unique skills to the table for the collective purpose of achieving the best result possible, whereupon we present it to the class. The chemical magic of different people in the same room working on a greater vision is what makes the result strong and special. His idea is to break down the task so everyone is in their own corner, siloed, and does their own bit only and presents it on the day of with no idea what the other is doing.
This is getting a bit ridiculous, as with his attitude, I can't even trust that he will do his part properly (he keeps claiming he is lost on the subject matter). I have insisted we all work on the project together as a result, but he keeps calling group meetings for the pure purpose of complaining about not knowing what is going on rather than working on the task at hand, which is a MASSIVE waste of time. How do some people actually have ZERO initiative in life?
