So this situation involves me (32F) My dad (63M) His dad/my grandfather (89M)

Back in the 80’s when my dad was accepted to grad school, my grandfather bought him a house paid in full. There has never been a mortgage on it. My dad lived there for about 2-5 years and has since leased it out and used it as additional income. The rent his tenants have paid him ultimately will go to HOA fees & property taxes etc but the rest is just additional income for him.

He is receiving rent in the amount of $2200/month (about $26k/year) His only real costs involving this home are $6000/year in property taxes $300/month HOA $200/month homeowners insurance

Recently my dad & grandfather added me to the deed in a joint ownership with the two of them, with the intention of me living there for the foreseeable future. It’s been agreed that I would handle the regular monthly & yearly fees and dues for taxes and everything. I’ll also be financially handling any inspections, renovations, replacement of appliances like dishwasher and electric etc. Essentially it will now be at no cost to my dad because I will be handling everything.

So it doesn’t really make sense to me that my dad is still trying to charge me rent in the amount of $2200??? And he is insisting that if I were to have another person (roommate or live-in partner) move in with me that the rent would then DOUBLE and we would have to pay him $4400/mo? This obviously is not going to a mortgage because there isn’t one. And he is refusing to pay property taxes or HOA fees on it if I’m living there because it should ultimately be my responsibility since he added my name to the deed.

My grandfather never asked for a cut of the profits my dad made from leasing the house, nor did he ask him to pay rent in the time that he lived there.

My grandfather wants my dad to let me live there without paying him rent, I think he is hoping this house can stay in the family for several generations since it’s close to the university all of us graduated from. My dad would NOT be struggling financially without rent payments from this house. Him and my grandfather are both doctors without any student loan debt who both also both live in their own paid-off houses.

I’ve tried to negotiate for him to accept a smaller monthly rent payment instead but he refuses. It’s been really difficult to navigate because I love my dad and don’t want to strain that relationship but it doesn’t make sense that he would be utilizing me and any potential roommate solely for profit.

So WIBTA if I didn’t pay rent?
