So my MIL sent a text to a group chat today that included myself, my husband, his 2 brothers and my sister in law. Their family dog (got when the boys were in college so not even a childhood dog, it's mostly her companion) had eye surgery and she sent a picture of the dog after surgery saying that everything went well. My husband texted back saying let us know if you need help with anything to which my MIL replied' " I will need help with all of the vet bills. I’ll wait till after the next appointment in May and total all the bills and divide by 4." I was just shocked. She had not consulted us previous to this. She has mentioned to my husband before that the vet was expensive and he offered to help if she needed it but never agreed to "split the cost". I was livid. How can she just expect them to pay for it? Mind you we have 3 kids and I stay home with them while my husband works a decent job but it's not like we have a bunch of extra money laying around. Of course my husband and his brothers will never tell her no but I felt like it was insane for her to just expect them to pay for her dog. So I responsed in the group chat' "We can help but respectfully this is something that needs to be talked about beforehand and not just expected. We care about ___ but we have 3 kids and lots of our own responsibilities." My husband is furious with me but I can't believe he sees no issue with his mom. AITA?
