I’m 19F, and last weekend I went on a first date with a guy, Jake (21M), who I met through a mutual friend’s group chat. We’d been texting for a week, and he seemed nice—into gaming, pretty chill, and he kept saying he wanted to “treat” me to a fun night out. He suggested this burger joint that’s super popular but not cheap, like $20 a plate. I’m a college student working retail, so I’m always strapped for cash, but Jake was adamant, texting me, “I got you, don’t stress about the cost!” I figured he meant he’d cover the bill, especially since he picked the place and hyped it up.
We meet up, and things are going okay. We order burgers, fries, and milkshakes, chatting about school and stuff. Jake’s fun, but I notice he’s dodging deeper questions, which is whatever—it’s a first date. Halfway through, the server brings the check early because they’re slammed and trying to turn tables. The bill’s $55, way more than I expected. I look at Jake, expecting him to grab it since he said he’d “got me.” Instead, he leans back, grins, and says, “So, we splitting this or what?” I’m stunned. I remind him he said he’d cover, and he laughs, going, “Oh, I meant I’d cover picking the spot and planning—my bad if you thought I meant cash!”
Now I’m pissed. I only brought $15 because I trusted him, and I’ve got maybe $30 in my account until next week. I tell him I can’t cover half—it’s not fair when he promised. He shrugs and says, “Just put in what you can, I’ll figure out the rest later.” I toss $10 on the table, already annoyed, and he doesn’t even offer to cover the rest, just starts scrolling his phone. I feel totally misled—like he lured me to an expensive place knowing I couldn’t afford it. So, I decided I wasn’t sticking around. I told him, “This isn’t cool, I’m out,” grabbed my bag, and left while he was mid-bite. The server gave me a weird look, but I just kept walking.
Jake blew up my phone later, calling me dramatic for “storming out” over a “miscommunication.” He said I humiliated him and should’ve stayed to talk it out. My friend who knows him says I was too harsh and Jake probably didn’t mean to screw me over, just messed up his words. But my roommate’s on my side, saying he baited me with a fake promise. I get that bailing mid-date might’ve been extra, but I felt stuck and disrespected. AITA?
