So I (29F) am married to my husband (29M) and together we have a year old daughter. My family has really showed up for us. I mean my sister supplied us with a year’s worth of diapers and wipes. My mom got us an owlet, my sister - a diaper genie and my dad gave us money for her education. Despite this, it doesn’t matter to me how much or how expensive the gift is, I just always felt like it was my family’s way of making sure we were settled and feel supported. My family all live abroad in Caribbean and still showed up for us.
My husband’s family lives in Nigeria and they have not gotten us anything and she is now one year old. They haven’t even gotten her anything for her birthday. No one. Not his parents, not his sister who lives in Canada. No one. Not even a pack of wipes or a cute bow for her hair.
I am aware that his family’s financial situation is not the same as mine, however, his parents were able to fund his and his sister’s education here in Canada with cash so I mean, that says something. I still had student loans.
Now I haven’t brought this up to him and tbh, I don’t know if I should because there is some tension with his family. But a part of me does think it’s a bit odd that they don’t feel the need to gift anything for the baby. Not even for her birthday.
AITA for being upset about this?
