Almost 3 years ago, when my mom was dying from cancer, she and my dad called and offered me my dream. I had brought to them a few years prior a business plan for a food truck for my partner and I to run. Not only would that give us a steady income, but keep a buffer between us and the public, since my partner is prone to illness. They had just sold their 2nd home and wanted to give us the proceeds in order to start and fund this food truck for the first 3 years. According to my dad, there was a limit by the IRS for how much they could give us per year without penalty, so they gave us 140k in January and it was supposed to be repeated 2 more times to keep us going while the food truck got up to speed.
I was kinda surprised the first years money came in on time, as my dad has never been particularly generous. But once it did we started the build on the food truck. That took nearly a year getting all our paperwork and inspections done after the build was complete, and during that year my mom died.
The next year the money didn't come. He claimed he didn't remember, that they'd changed their mind, that the money was gone.. his story kept changing. He did finally start giving us a monthly stipend just to make sure we could pay our rent. We scraped through last year, running our business on a shoestring and not being able to keep up with our bills. He started playing pickleball and dating, as well as remodeling their house. He had said he was going to keep giving us a monthly amount until the end of the year, and we were preparing to deal with that loss, when he comes to us in October, tells us he's getting married, and cuts us off.
Now it's been 6 months, we've been getting a little help from family but we're facing eviction. And he texts "just wanted to see how everyone is doing"
Our text convo is linked - AITA for calling him out?
Edited to Add: the 140k was to build the food truck(100k) and 40k to live on for 1 year in a place that 70k is the cost of living. It left us nothing to be able to run the business after build out. He did admit he just didn't want to follow through
