Yesterday morning I blundered into the office late as always—alarm never rang, spilled coffee on my shirt, the whole shebang. I was starving by the time I got to the kitchen. I grabbed what I thought was my breakfast: an overnight oat bowl with chia seeds and blueberries, labeled "T. Miller.".
I nuked it, covered it with granola, and gobbled the whole thing in about two minutes flat. Felt great… until I caught a glance from a co-worker, Tom, who had his mouth hanging open while staring at me.
As it turned out, Tom had taken that same container (same type, same handwriting) for his own breakfast and just left it in the fridge. He'd put down "T. Miller" because his name is Tim Miller and he shortens. I thought "T. Miller" was my mark—my name's Taylor Miller and I always sign it "Taylor M."
I had been mistaken when I noticed Tom so glum, and my empty bowl. I apologized, offering to take him for breakfast (or to purchase a replacement oats), but he brushed the offer aside saying, "No need to apologize. I must have been wrong not to have written full names."
My other coworker Jen's comment was that I was TA because "you took his lunch," and I should have asked to see the receipt or something. But honestly, I did think it was mine, and I did offer to replace it. Tom seems to be past it, but Jen's still giving me side-eye.
So, Reddit, AITA?
