Hi all- I'll try to make this succinct (but I won't be able to :p). I've always had a polite but distanced relationship with my in-laws. They're good people and have been kind to me, but ever since having my daughter who is now 11 months old (their first grandchild), their level of obsession with her has driven me a bit nuts. They don't live in state, but visit (and stay in our house) for weeks as a time, and while they're around, I am VERY overwhelmed by their behavior. They constantly want to hold my daughter and they immediately take her into different rooms without me (this was happening even when she was a newborn), and I generally feel very out of control when they're around. They also comment a LOT on how I'm doing things with her (i.e. "the water level in the bath is too high!", "don't rough house with her, she just ate!", "put on knee pads on her, crawling hurts her knees!", "when is her next pediatrician appointment? You need to get x checked out."). One time, when my daughter was playing with a napkin, my FIL said, "don't let her put that in her mouth" and when I said that I was ok with it and that I was watching her, my MIL stood up and snached her out of my arms. It's completely and utterly overwhelming. Additionally, they do things with her all the time without asking me (my MIL once tried to feed her cucumbers when she was 6 months old). I want my daughter to have a good relationship with them, they love her so much, and would like to find the tools to navigate this new phase of our relationship. They have her safety and best interest at heart, but they just completely overwhelm me. I don't expect them to change, I would just like to find tools to be able to stand up for myself and not lament over interactions. I'm seeing a therapist about this as it has caused several anxiety attacks but would also like to arm myself with some online help and suggestions. So AITA for getting upset when Iām they act like this? What should I do? (BTW husband is on my side and is constantly telling them to stop)
