My boyfriend (31M) and I (27F) have been together for 8 months, but the first 7 of those months were entirely online, so we only went on our first in person date about 3 and a half weeks ago when he moved to the city I live in. We've been on 8 formal dates now and we hang out just about every day, and things have gotten pretty far.

On Saturday, he took me out on a really nice date and we ended up having sex at his place. Before we got to that point, he went down to smell me (he has a really big thing for that) and he made the comment that I kind of smelled like garlic down there. He said it in a positive tone, but I still asked him if it bothered him, and he gave a super enthusiastic no and said that he just liked picking up on whenever I smelled different, then he apologized. I said it didn't bother me (which it didn't, it was super clear that he didn't mean it to come across as mean in any way whatsoever) and we just both made a joke about dinner and had a laugh about it and carried on with our night from there.

On Sunday, I was with 2 of my friends (the one relevant to the post is 26F) and I told them about my date with my boyfriend and I told them about our night. When the garlic thing came up one of them took it as him just being an oddball and me being enough of an oddball to also find it funny, while my other friend frowned and said he shouldn't have said that. I said that it was funny and didn't bother me, but she insisted that it was mean/rude of him to say that.

I again emphasized that he didn't mean anything bad by it and that it was more bothersome to me that she was trying to make a bigger deal out of it. We ended up arguing and she said that she couldn't see how I could be okay with him saying that to me, and I told her I didn't know why she couldn't be okay with me being with someone who really loves and cares for me.

I ended up leaving our gathering early and she tried sending me texts later on Sunday, Monday, and today saying that I was taking it wrong and that she was just trying to help, but I haven't responded to her yet. She's definitely getting more impatient in her texts too, but honestly, I still am really upset with her.
