So for context, my friend and I are seniors in high school. We are in a very rich neighborhood so we don’t like the idea of not doing well academically.

She’s gotten into college, just as I have, and we’re trying still to do well in classes and on APs.

She texted me suggesting that she was going to delete all her social media apps because in her words, “they were distracting her”. We had a call where I tried to cheer her up, and eventually I started trying to convince her that there wasn’t a problem

She messed up on one test, and had been doing well. I tried to convince her that she was doing very well.

One method I tried to use was to show her how absurd it was to stop at just one app. I told her that she shouldn’t stop at one app. She should delete them all. If she couldn’t control herself, she should gouge out her eyes.

If that didn’t work, she should go deaf so she couldn’t be distracted. And if that didn’t work, she should kill herself because she’d just end up distracted and unhappy in life.

She took it well, understood that it was a joke, but I still feel like I went a bit too far, so AITA?
