I (30M) work in a small office where most of us are friendly but not super close. One of my coworkers (let’s call him Dan, 32M) is moving apartments and sent out a group text asking if anyone was free to help him move furniture over the weekend.
I didn’t respond right away because honestly, I had plans — nothing dramatic, just things I’d been looking forward to after a long week. Plus, I don’t really know Dan outside of work. A few hours later, he followed up and specifically messaged me like, “Hey man, I could really use an extra pair of hands. You free Saturday morning?”
I told him I couldn’t make it and hoped the move went well. He replied, “No worries,” but the vibe at work on Monday was definitely off. He barely said a word to me, and when I asked him about something work-related, he gave a short, cold response.
Later, another coworker told me that Dan felt “let down” and said I “wasn’t a team player.” I don’t know — I just feel like helping someone move heavy furniture on my weekend isn’t some obligation just because we work together. It’s not like we’re best friends.
So… AITA for not helping my coworker move even though he asked directly? 6
