I, 15 female, spend a lot of time with my papa because other than his dog, he lives alone. His basement is my own personal apartment because of how much time I spend at his house. His dog, smush, is a two year old pit bull that he got from the pound. This dog absolutely adores me and protects me like his life depends on it, I promise this is relevant.

My grandpa's neighbor, who I'll call Kyle, got a German shepherd from the pound a few months ago and let's him put in his front yard without a leash. Which wouldn't be a problem if he had trained the dog to not be violent towards other people. The only thing separating their yards are some bushes so it's a bit scary when he starts barking at me. Smush on the other hand is on a lead in the back yard, we use one of those really long screw things that get put in the ground. He can get to the sides of the house but that's it.

Two weeks ago during spring break I was getting my papa's mail for him when the dog started barking at me again, but Kyle wasn't there to stop him. He kept barking then lunged at me and bit down on my arm, so I obviously starting screaming. Smush was suddenly at the dog's throat, he managed to pull the screw out for the first time.

My grandpa and Kyle both came running out but I don't remember much of that part, I had to get stitches and afterwards we took smush to the vet, he didn’t have any injuries. Sadly, the other dog ended up having to be put down because they couldn't save him. When we got back Kyle was screaming at us and throwing cruel names at my papa, who is disabled. He can't use his right arm and can barley use his right leg.

Kyle continued this for a few days everyime we were outside and papa was tired of it. He has security cameras and decided to use the footage to sue Kyle. His niece is in my class and has been harassing me about this. It's very known that my grandpa would do anything for me but I don't think he's wrong for wanting to sue Kyle. I feel bad for the dog but that's it.

Does this make me a bad person? Maybe Kyle is just grieving in his own way? Should I feel bad for Smush wanting to protect me?
