I (24F) have been with my boyfriend (26M) for 3 years. We're pretty serious, talking about marriage soon-ish. His parents have always been super nice to me, especially his mom who treats me like a daughter.
Last week, I was using his laptop (with permission) to check my email when a notification popped up from his mom. I wasn't snooping, I swear, but the preview showed "...about the ring" and I couldn't help myself.
I opened it and OMG. His mom had sent him pics of her old engagement ring saying "This would be perfect for my name!" But here's the thing - it's literally the UGLIEST ring I've ever seen. Like, massive yellow gold 80s vibes with this weird cluster of tiny diamonds.
I panicked and did something impulsive. I responded AS HIM saying "Thanks mom but I already picked something else." Then I deleted the email completely.
Well, she called him immediately all upset about the "rude" response. He was confused, confronted me, and I confessed everything. He was LIVID saying I betrayed his trust, impersonated him, and hurt his mom's feelings. He said the ring was a family heirloom that meant a lot to them.
I tried explaining that I panicked and just didn't want to wear something I hated forever, but he says I should've talked to him instead of going behind his back. His mom is super hurt, and now everyone's calling me shallow and materialistic.
But like??? I'm the one who has to wear it forever??? And they never even asked what I might want? I feel terrible about HOW I handled it, but not about wanting a ring I actually like.
So, AITA for impersonating my bf to prevent getting an ugly family heirloom ring?
