📝 AITA for putting my boyfriend's shoes outside after he tracked dog poop across our apartment?

I (24F) have always been a bit of a clean freak. Like, I'm not obsessive, but I like my space tidy. I moved in with my bf (26M) last year, and while he's amazing in most ways, his cleaning habits are... questionable.

The issue: he insists on bringing his shoes inside and wearing them all over our apartment. We live in NYC where streets are basically petri dishes of gross. i've asked him repeatedly to take them off, but he always "forgets" or says it's "not a big deal."

Last week, I snapped. He'd walked through rain, stepped in what I'm pretty sure was dog poop, and then tracked it all over our cream-colored rug that I'd just cleaned. Without thinking, I grabbed all his shoes (like 8 pairs) and put them in a storage bin outside our door with a note saying "No shoes inside = no arguments."

He came home, FLiPPED OUT, said i had no right to "control" him in his own home and that I was being psycho. He called his mom (eye roll) who said I was being "culturally insensitive" because his family never had a no-shoes policy growing up.

My roommate from college (who's Japanese-American) texted me saying I was 100% right and she was horrified anyone would wear outside shoes indoors.

Now he's sleeping on the couch, his mom is sending me passive-aggressive texts about "compromise in relationships," and my bf is saying I embarrassed him by "treating him like a child" with the shoe bin.

But like... am I crazy? It's basic hygiene! Our home isn't a sidewalk extension!

So, AITA for enforcing a no-shoes policy by putting my bf's shoes outside?
