So, I (26M) have a friend (25F) who has been going through some financial struggles recently. She asked me for a loan to help cover rent for the next month because she lost her job. I’ve always been the type to help out my friends when I can, but for some reason, I was hesitant this time.
I’m not exactly rich, but I do have some savings. My hesitation comes from the fact that she’s been in similar situations before and never really paid me back when she borrowed money in the past. Every time she asks, it’s always the same “I’ll pay you back as soon as I get on my feet,” but she never does.
I told her that I couldn’t lend her money this time, and she’s really upset with me. She says that I’m being selfish and unsupportive, especially since we’ve been friends for years. But I can’t help feeling like I’m enabling her by constantly lending her money and never getting it back.
AITA for refusing to lend her money this time, even though she’s really struggling?
Edit: Just to clarify, she still owes me money from two separate times in the past year. I didn’t push her on it because I didn’t want to seem insensitive, but now I’m starting to feel more like a backup plan than a friend. Appreciate the honest feedback here.
