I (29M) have been dating my girlfriend (27F) for about a year and a half. Things have been going great, and lately she’s been spending most of her time at my place — like, 5 or 6 nights a week. I live alone in a one-bedroom apartment that I’ve had for a few years now. I’m kind of minimalist, and I like my space the way it is: clean, neutral colors, simple furniture.
Recently, she’s started making comments like, “This place needs more color,” or “You should hang more pictures on the walls.” At first, I didn’t think much of it, but then she started bringing stuff over — throw pillows, candles, little decorative signs with cheesy quotes — and just putting them around without asking. I quietly moved some of them back into the closet when she wasn’t around.
Last week, she said she wanted to “spruce the place up” and offered to redecorate parts of the living room. I told her I appreciate the thought, but I like the place as it is and prefer to keep it my style. She got quiet and later told me I was being controlling and that it didn’t feel like “our space” if she couldn’t contribute to it.
Now she’s distant and acting like I don’t take our relationship seriously. But from my point of view, we haven’t even officially moved in together, and I still pay all the rent and bills. I feel like I’m being pressured into turning my apartment into something I don’t want.
So… AITA for telling her no?
