Last night, we had guests staying over at our apartment. We had informed our roommates days in advance in the group chat that guests would be sleeping in the living room. One of our roommates left a bunch of her stuff in that space, even after being notified, including her backpack.
To make room for the guests, we carefully moved her things—including the backpack—to the side. We didn’t throw or slam anything, just gently relocated it out of the way. The next day, she claims her laptop (which was inside her backpack) is now broken and that we are responsible for it.
When I asked for clarification, she said the screen is damaged but not the glass. It was supposedly just sitting in the backpack. I’ve seen the laptop—it has some internal screen damage (vertical lines on the screen, black strip on one side), but there’s no visible external damage. No cracks, no dents. It genuinely looks like something that either happened before or due to internal pressure—not from dropping it or mishandling.
She’s now saying we should at least pay for repairs. But I don’t see how we’re at fault: • She left the laptop unsupervised in a common area after being told we’d be using it. • We moved everything carefully. • There’s no proof we caused the damage. • It could’ve happened before or after, or just been wear and tear.
On top of that, she has broken this same laptop at least five times before. I clearly remember her saying she wasn’t going to use it anymore because it didn’t work, and that’s why she got an iPad and a new PC. So now I’m side-eyeing this whole situation, because the laptop was already in bad shape and now suddenly it’s our fault?
So Reddit—AITA?
