I have an 18 y/o step daughter that is very liberal, and very head strong. She believes that EVERYONE is automatically due respect simply because they are humans (not sure about her logic). She also believes that everyone is entitled to rights.
Last Christmas after dinner, she got on this topic, after she said her peace, I obliterated her by explaining that rights and respect are tied to responsibility... the more a person contributes to society, the more rights and respect they are given, that senior citizens are typically given more respect than new born babies, and that prisoners don't have any rights, nor should get any respect because of what they have done. I pointed out that farmers, firefighters, paramedics, oil rig workers deserve more respect than secretaries, office workers, and most people that sit on their asses, pushing paper. I went on to explain that anyone that has to rely on someone else for the majority of their care doesn't have any rights, they have privileges. When she asked me to elaborate, I explained that she does NOT have a right to a vehicle that she doesn't pay on, help pay for gas, pay for the insurance, or help with maintenance. Having full 24 hour unrestricted access to a kitchen that she does not help clean, does not help keep stocked with food, or help with any cooking/meal prep that benefits the entire family is also not a right. He cell phone, access to the wifi, access to the electricity, and natural gas that heats the house, and provides hot water are privileges, NOT rights. I concluded by saying that even her constitutional rights ended when she (or any of our other children) were on our property, in one of our vehicles, or in public with myself, or my wife. At that point everyone else gave me a round of applause, and she sat across from me staring daggers. She eventually stood up and left the house without saying another word to anyone.
Did I go too far?
