I have been dating my boyfriend for a year. He’s great, but his mom? Not so much.
She’s super into appearances—fancy clothes, etiquette, “improving yourself.” I grew up pretty modest and work in a creative field. First time I met her, she said, “Oh! You’re quirky. That’s cute. He always liked fixer-uppers.”
Since then, she’s made “subtle” suggestions: sent me links to makeover shows, offered to pay for a “real” haircut, even gifted me a book called Polished Women Win. No joke.
I ignored it… until Easter dinner, when she said, in front of everyone, “I’m so glad he found someone he can help grow into a more refined woman.”
I looked her dead in the eye and said, “Thanks, but I’m not his project. I’m his partner.”
Awkward silence. She turned red. My boyfriend didn’t say much after, just drove us home in silence. Later he said I could’ve been “more respectful.”
Now the whole family thinks I embarrassed her. But I think she embarrassed me.
AITA?
