I have been living with my roommate for more than a year now. Things have been mostly fine but recently she’s been consistently late on her rent payments. Sometimesshe is a few days late, and sometimes more. I have tried to be understanding and even offered to split the rent early thrice when I had extra money.But it’s becoming a pattern.

This month the rent was due on the 1st and she still hadn’t paid by the 15th. She had been kept asking me if I can assist her again this month. I told her that I’m not comfortable covering for her anymore and that I won’t pay her share if she’s late again. I also told her that paying rent on time is her responsibility and I expect her to handle it. She got pretty defensive and told me that I’m being strict and that she’s going through some financial struggles but she neverr revealed that to me before.

Now she is super upset and says I’m being unreasonable and that I should still cover her rent sometimes because “it’s just rent.” Also she added that because she helped me cook few times. That frustrated me a lot because I felt like I have been patient and helpful to her but I also don’t want to be taken advantage of or enable her bad habits.

So I wanted to ask here that AITA for refusing to cover my roommate’s rent if she doesn’t pay on time?
