AITA for threatening my apartment complex with legal action after months of flooding and no resolution?
I (20s, F) have been dealing with serious flooding in my apartment since mid-January. It’s now April, and while the issue has been ongoing for nearly three months, my leasing office has done next to nothing. There has been only one failed attempt to fix the flooding and that didn’t resolve the issue at all.
The water enters under the front door, goes near my balcony and enters into my room as well. Apparently, it cannot be easily fixed due to “weather”. I leave towels at my front door to drain the water but it’s often not enough. There are times I’ve had to leave through my balcony to keep the front door towels in place.
For context, I’ve been in contact with the property manager for about a month now. He hasn’t been outright rude, but he’s also failed to get back to me consistently and has not provided any clear timeline or resolution plan.
The leasing office staff, however, have been a completely different story. Over the past 3 to 4 months, they’ve: • Been directly rude to me on multiple occasions • Ignored my calls • Dismissed me with “there’s nothing we can do” as their only response
Meanwhile, the flooding has continued to damage the apartment and made it uncomfortable and, honestly, unlivable. I’ve been paying full rent during all of this. My main concern is mold. This apartment advertised themselves as luxury, but the tiles are literally peel off stickers.
Today, I sent a final written notice threatening legal action, rent abatement, and a formal complaint to housing authorities if I don’t receive a response or solution within 48 hours. I was respectful but very firm, and I’m prepared to follow through if needed.
I don’t know if I should have given them a little more time since the manager “seems nice” and I’m not dealing with someone being outright hostile… but at the same time I’ve been patient for months with no benefit.
So… AITA for threatening legal action after months of being ignored and living with flooding?
I would attach images but it seems I can’t in this community. Know it’s excessive (think mid-west winters).
