I 23F and my partner also, 23F have two roommates, 23F and 24M, that all split $100 on FB Marketplace for a Samsung dryer that retails for $800. We all paid $25 each and it was my partner who went out of her way to find the dryer for our new place after no signs of effort were being showed by the others. Back in March, the dryer broke and stayed that way for 3 weeks. The only male in the house offered to fix or take a look at it and didn’t do so for that time and his girlfriend didn’t even mention it. After reminding him at the one week mark, he forgot again. So my partner and I took matters into our own hands and DIY’d the repair by taking the dryer apart. With the help of my partner’s stepdad, we were able to get $60 worth of parts installed and have a brand new dryer, no thanks to the other two roommates. Now we want to take it with us after spending more than what they paid for initially when it was purchased.
Our justification: While my partner’s stepdad was over, the 24M who we’ll call roomie #1 was in the kitchen and overhead the entire conversation and didn’t speak nor thank my partner’s stepdad for the job well done, even tho he has met him previously and knows who he is. Second, after offering to split the cost of the parts, he nor his girlfriend ever do so before we got the parts and even after they had been installed. Lastly, the stepdad said the damage of the old parts came from overloading the dryer, which he said loud enough for me, my partner, AND roomie #1 to hear. We assured him we would not overload it (this was due to roomie #1 and his girlfriend), and sure enough here comes his girlfriend who we’ll call roomie #2 overloading the crap out of the dryer for the rest of the week and essentially hogging the washing and drying machine after it had been broken for three weeks and everyone was fully aware. No thanks was given and she only made a snarky remake when seeing the dryer being taken apart for repairs.
Are me and my partner the asshole for wanting to take the dryer with us, no questions asked, once our lease ends in June?
