📝 AITA - I woke up my SO trying to fix the smoke detector beeping in the middle of the night.

The smoke detector started beeping at 3am last night because its batteries were low. I got woken up by it first, since I am a light sleeper, and my SO apparently didn’t hear it that well because my SO asked me what was going on when I got up to fix it. I told my SO the smoke detector was beeping loudly because its batteries were low.

Anyway, I got up, half-asleep, to fix it. It took me a little while to figure out which one it was because I was half-asleep—turns out it was the one in the hallway in between our bedroom and the guest bedroom. And it then took me a little while to fix it (5-10 minutes) because I was half asleep and needed to orient myself.

In the meantime, I guess I didn’t close the bedroom door and the light and beeping and alarm-ringing from getting the batteries in and fixing the smoke detector in the hallway adjacent to our bedroom were waking up my SO. I finally fixed it, really annoyed about the fact that this happened at 3am because I have a hard time sleeping generally and am pretty overworked right now, and knew I’d be losing at least 30 minutes of sleep because of that to get back into bed and back asleep.

I walked back into the bedroom after fixing it and my SO was pissed and started raising their voice at me, “What were you doing!? Why didn’t you close the door!? All that noise and light was getting in!” I responded, “Didn’t you hear the smoke detector?” My SO responded, “You could’ve closed the door!” I felt unfairly attacked and was upset that this outburst would cause me to take even longer to fall asleep, since I tend to fixate and ruminate and knew I'd have to be up in less than 3 hours.

My SO raised the issue in the morning, saying I should've been more mindful of the light and noise and closed the door. I apologized in the morning and said that I should’ve been more considerate but was just focused on trying to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible and so didn’t think about the light and noise. My SO said those considerations should’ve been obvious.
