📝 AITA to suggest our CPA pay for the extension filing?

I'm in a tough spot. Our CPA is also someone I know from someplace I am employed but they are not. So it will kind of make things awkward because I will see them going forward.

I gave them my tax paperwork March 14th. I have called 6 times and texted 6 times since, trying to work on followup of anything needed and find out when I could sign for the e-filing. They never did the contacting. Some of the calls and texts coincided with each other to clarify something discussed so they werent all necessarily for separate incidents (i.e. a call for when I can come and a text when on my way for example). But some of them were. I also made them aware in advance I was leaving out of town tomorrow so I would not be able to do anything else past today. And reminded them a few times about it.

Today I was under the impression I was only coming to pick up the form to have my husband and I sign. And I specifically stated over the phone yesterday when they asked to give them til today and on text, that was what my plan was.

There was no point during any of the prior communication that it was indicated there would be a problem completing my taxes on time or that there was anything wrong with any of the provided paperwork, with the exception that I was asked for an inventory list on April 7th which I provided within the hour and texted to let them know it was sent.

When I arrived to pick up the form, I was sat down and informed that the format I provided last year was not going to work this year for listing expenses and income, because it had to be filed differently this year. I would have to go through pages and pages of orders and reciepts to change the format. They wanted to know if I could do by tonight before I leave, and there is no way.

They filed an extension and said I would just have to pay them back later for the $576 ($288 for each me and my husband) on top of whatever I will owe for the tax preparation and filing. I struggled to advocate enough for myself then as I should have. But no matter who I go to, I don't have time to fix it before the April 15th deadline now.

As a side note, during small talk, they did make mention they took on to many clients this year. It was never communicated to me that there would be a problem getting mine done on time or I would have gone elsewhere and had time to fix paperwork in the past month.

I guess now I know why they say don't do business with people you know or family.

From their point of view, there's still 5 days left before the deadline. But from my point of view, there's 0 days left because I leave in 10 hours for a multi-day craft show that I have to travel to. I have to sleep and load things that couldnt be in advance somewhere in there. I will be very busy. And this was communicated well on advance.

Reddit, AITA if I ask them to cover the extension?
