My husband and I moved to a new town 3 years ago and at first got along with our neighbors. We are surrounded by retired seniors and we are late 30s/early 40s. Our one neighbor and his wife go to Mexico for 6 months of the year through winter so we only see them in the spring and summer. (We are in Canada.) So about a year and a half ago we had a bad wind storm here in town. We get windy days but this was like 100-150 km/hour wind. We had never experienced this before living here. We weren't home that day as we were visiting family in the city an hour and a half away. We drove home thay evening when the wind was starting to pick up and we saw there was a wind warning. When we reached our town we saw branches and things flying everywhere, garbage bins knocked over, etc. When we got home we quickly were trying to check all around the house to see if anything blew away or got damaged. We went into the backyard when the wind was still really bad and our back gate was busted open and a couple beams from our pergola had fallen down. Then we saw in the back section of our yard where the trampoline was, it was gone. We looked and saw it flipped over in our neighbor's yard beside their house and saw that a window pane above it was broken. We weighed the trampoline down with rocks as we couldn't move it in the wind and got it back in our yard the next day. At that time we didn't have a fence in the back part of our yard so that's how it blew into their yard. Now we have a fence and stakes and straps that secure the trampoline to the ground.

At that time the neighbors were in Mexico for another few months and we had no way to contact them as they never gave us their phone number. We didn't know what to do so I wrote them a note about what happened and stuck it in their door. They had someone coming by to check the house once in a while but the note was never touched as I guess they didn't use the front door. After a few weeks I took the note out and put another one in the crack of their door to update it. I don't know if they ever got the note. They came home a few weeks after that and refused to talk to us. My husband went over one day to talk to them about something and the man lost his mind and was swearing and yelling at my husband about the trampoline and whatever else he could blame him for. My husband asked if he used insurance to fix the window and he said no, they just paid to replace the pane of glass. Luckily it was just one pane. He asked him if they got my note and he said no and acted like we deliberately tried to damage their property or something when we weren't even home at the time of the wind storm. We didn't see if it was even the our trampoline that broke their window or if it was something else like a branch. There were branches all over our yards after the storm. Obviously that's what home insurance is for if something happens that's out of our control but this guy acted like it was our fault. He never asked us to help pay for the window and never came over to talk to us. We were the ones who tried to contact and talk to him. Ever since he has not spoken to us. We are a low income couple and even if we had the money to help pay for the pane, we had no idea at the time that the town ever even got enough wind to flip a trampoline. Now that we know we have made sure it's staked in the ground. So AITAH because our trampoline flew into their yard or is this just an act of God like any storm that no one can control?
